Very few women tell the police or a specialist ser

Very few women tell the police or a specialist service first when they experience family violence. They're more likely to tell someone they trust, like their hairdresser or beauty therapist.

The HaiR-3Rs training gives those working in the hair and beauty industry the tools to help someone experiencing abuse. You will learn the how to:

• Recognise signs of family violence
• Respond appropriately to disclosures
• Refer clients to specialist services

The greatest risk factor for family violence is gender – being a women!
Research tells us that gender inequality and the gendered drivers create an environment where violence against women is more likely to occur. This includes:

• Condoning of violence against women
• Men’s control of decision making and limits to women’s independence
• Rigid gender stereotypes about what men and women are meant to be like
• Male peer relations and cultures that emphasise aggression, dominance and control

Having a conversation with someone who you might t

Having a conversation with someone who you might think is experiencing family violence can be a daunting thing to do. But it could be one of the most valuable, and powerful conversations you have in your salon.

Asking someone the question:
• Overcomes barriers to disclosure
• Helps reduce shame
• Let’s them know that you’re someone they can talk too. Very few women approach family violence services or police in the first instance.

Remember: No one has been hurt by being asked – women are hurt by never being asked.

Did you know that almost 1 in 4 women have experie

Did you know that almost 1 in 4 women have experienced violence since the age of fifteen? Or that on average, 1 women is murdered every 9 days by her current or former partner.

Very few women experiencing family violence tell the police or a specialist service first. They’re more likely to talk to someone they trust or have a close bond with. For many, this is a salon professional such as a hairdresser or beauty therapist. Through research, we discovered salon workers were being told about family violence, but receive no formal training to handle family violence when it comes up in the chair. Our program aims to bridge this gap, and prevent victim-survivors and salon professionals being left at risk.
